Dachshund Turned Itself in at a Lost-and-Found

A German dachshund from Bredstedt that could not find her way home turned herself in at a lost-and-found office.

Druse vom Hoellengrund, a female doxie trained to attack foxes in their underground lairs, trotted into the municipal office building in Bredstedt and laid down exhausted on the floor.

Druse was re-united with her owner, thanks to a local hunter who happened to be in the building and recognized the dachshund.

Officials said the doxie seemed to have gotten lost during a hunt, probably after losing a fox's scent during a chase and headed into town after failing to find her way home. spiegel.de

Bandera County couple accused of running a puppy mill had 43 dachshunds seized from their property last month and were fined nearly $7,000. A severely injured dachshund rescued from the mill is on the road to recovery. Thanks to donations from the community and care from her foster parents, Rainbow has a chance at a better life. Rainbow is turned over every four hours to prevent bed sores and receives care around the clock. She is believed to be about three years old and was bred at an alleged Utopia puppy mill in dark and dirty conditions. She was somehow injured, leaving her back legs useless and leaving her unable to walk. See the video here We need more respectable breeders instead of money hungry, heartless business owners.

Faced with a pet deposit that she was unable to afford at her apartment, Annan surrendered her doxie this summer to the Placer Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "I bawled my eyes out and my kids were devastated."

It's a situation that is happening daily across the country during grim economic times. However, Princess happened to land at an agency that had a solution.

Shortly after the dog arrived, the Placer SPCA near Sacramento started a program designed to give responsible pet owners, hit hard by the recession, a chance to keep their pets. 1 in 4 Dachshunds will encounter back problems as a result of their long body and spine. Repairing an injured disc in a Dachshund is painful and any necessary surgery is quite expensive. Here are a few ways to keep your Dachshund safe and prevent disc injuries.

1) Avoid excess jumping. Doxies may like to jump, but be careful of how much you let them do it.

2) Keep your Dachshund at a healthy weight. Obviously, the less they weigh, the less likely they are to have too much pressure on its spine.

3) Buy or build a ramp. Pet stores offer ramps that can be used so your Dachshund can walk up and down a couch or bed safely. If you are handy, build it yourself. They are generally inexpensive one way or another.

4) Don't play rough. Dachshunds love to play, and tug of war isn't the best option for a healthy spine. Avoid rough play and you will be less likely to cause back injuries.

A little brown dachshund died recently after eating deadly death cap mushrooms. Death caps produce the most serious types of mushroom poisonings which can result in liver failure and death. In the Bay Area, these mushrooms can be found all year round. They are most abundant in the fall and during early winter, but can also be found through late spring and even during dry summers and in areas of coastal fog drip, according to the Mycological Society. I personally found some in my back yard not too long ago and removed them immediately.
